"The Gentleman's Retreat"
A room designed for the
Newport Showhouse Guild 2003 at
The Quail Tree House in Newport, RI
The design for "The Gentleman's Retreat" was a reflection our "client's" tastes, preferences, and background with intentions to serve as a place of solitude and refuge from his busy lifestyle. This retreat showcased his collected treasures and most recent acquisitions, while allowing the contents of the room to appear as if it has been there for years. The design team has used a variety of textures, tones, layers and styles to create this time-worn Old World look.
Faux wood grain and burl wood treatments were applied to the walls, doors, and built-in bookshelf, which added a great deal of warmth and dimension to the room. An Italian crystal chandelier cast a soft luminescent glow from the sage green colored ceiling. This lavish room was appointed with a skillfully carved daybed, created by Leonards in mahogany. This unique bed was dressed with custom bed linens, beautiful pillows and an opulent drapery treatment. A clover-shaped ottoman and paisley chair were positioned near the fireplace-perfect for relaxing or reading. Various works of art were displayed on the walls, adding another layer of dimension. Fine antiques were selected to add interest and importance to the space, while complementing the reproduction pieces used throughout. The window and French doors were treated with matchstick blinds to allow our client the flexibility to see outside, while diffusing the natural light. Balloon shades create volume and soften the wood treatment beneath. Overall, this sophisticated room exudes warmth and comfort.
