1850 Plaque House on the Historic East Side of Providence, Rhode Island
A stately entry hall with lively, floral wallpaper immediately sets the tone for this 1850 plaque house situated on the historic East Side of Providence, Rhode Island. The designers assignment was to complete the living room located directly off the entrance foyer. "Timeless, beautiful and comfortable" were the objectives of the homeowners. A magnificent Portuguese needlepoint rug anchors the room balancing the substantial dentil molding and carved medallion on the ceiling. At the windows, two upholstered chairs covered in a Lee Jofa floral print cozy up to a handsome, empire table in mahogany. A Scalamandre silk plaid on the ottoman complements the strong floral pattern and provides a place to rest feet or strategically place a drink tray.
A beautiful, gold damask fabric makes the two seated sofa a desirable place to sit and enjoy the facing fireplace. Above the fireplace we chose to place a beguiling oil portrait of a young boy and dog signed by H.B. Skeely in 1872. The room is atmospherically lit with table lamps and gilded double arm wall sconces. A well thought out mixture of high end reproduction furniture and antiques constitutes the majority of the room. Tasteful art collected by the client, lovely accessories and textured fabrics fill the room creating an intimate, cozy environment for the family of four yet also provides an elegant space for entertaining a large group.
